May books

In a reinforcing effort to manifest May’s mission, May also developed and incubated the first specialty art, design and creative source publications shop, May books in the fall of 2014. May books has since left the auspices of May gallery & residency and is now called The Stacks, which operates in New Orleans’ Contemporary Art Center.

We’re very proud to have taken a key role in the continuation of New Orleans’ contemporary art community development, and hopefully, our mission—to bring transparency and accessibility to contemporary art, its culture, and the means of its production— has served it’s purpose and will continue to inspire others.

May gallery & residency

Established in 2012 and closed January 1st, 2017, May produced and funded eleven immersive, multi-sensory, large-scale solo exhibitions by exceptional, emerging and mid-career international, contemporary artists. Among May’s funding organizations and partners include The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, The Mondriaan Fund, Prospect New Orleans, The Joan Mitchell Center, many local and national foundations, and numerous individual donors from around the world.

Over the four years that May operated, hundreds of people volunteered and participated as board members to help produce the astounding and consistently awe-inspiring immersive exhibitions, which thousands of visitors from around the world viewed and participated in. May gallery & residency was the first international artist residency in the Greater New Orleans area. It provided a 3000 square foot open floor plan space, and full funding for our residents’ housing, art creation, and living expenses. May’s artists were supported to produce experimental, architectural-intervention style art exhibitions which would be typically unsalable in a commercial setting, and too burdensome and costly for many institutions to install and maintain.

“This exhibition portrays two dualistic complex powers that are omnipresent in this city. Man and object oppose the flow of water. The installation houses two distinct works that speak together about the geographical and social context of New Orleans. The works are as succinct as they can be, but have emerged from things I discovered and experienced during my residency. Much like a kōan, the installation is not set within a logical framework; it is designed to introduce an alternative, deeper understanding of the place we are in. The installation is there to provoke space for new thoughts creating a doorway to the complexity of this city that surround us. ” —Lotte Geeven

VIGOR is a solo exhibition comprised of a video projection, a moving image and an immersive installation with a proprietary publication. Lotte’s exhibition at May is the culmination of her artist residency in New Orleans, which began in February, 2014. Through the bi-weekly journal A Walk With…, produced by May, her cultural, sonic and geographic explorations have been documented and made available to the public as a printed newspaper, and downloadable document. Her exhibition at May serves as a stage for understanding the city and the ways in which upriver regions have metaphorically and literally fed the terra firma that New Orleans sits upon.

Lotte Geeven (b. 1980) is a multi-media artist from Amsterdam creating tailor-made portraits of sovereign places. These simple portraits with a graphical character aim to envelope the magic of autonomy and explore complex matter & power beyond our control related to a specific place. For example, The Sound of the Earth – a sound recording from the deepest open hole in the planet- is a portrait of the abstract deep earth. Or the work Sovereign – an upside down Jaguar spinning on it’s back in slow motion in an empty parking lot – is an exploration of the ambiguous character of this sovereign location.

As an program integral to the mission of May gallery & residency, May books publishes books, zines and other printed matters which bring transparency to the concepts and fabrication processes of artwork produced and shown at May gallery. Formerly also a bookshop project incubated by May, which is now called The Stacks, May books will continue to provide educational materials to help make art more accessible to a broader audience.

As a part of May’s residency program, we preserve the resident-artist’s creative intent by documenting the dialogue between the resident-artist, community members, curator and preparator, as well as the creation of the exhibitions at May.

May books prints its publications primarily in-house on our high speed risograph duplicator, donated by RISO, inc. This helps to keep printing costs minimal and our publications affordable. We also print through either local offset printers and, depending on the needs of the project.
